It is a management lean tool developed by the Japanese company,TOYOTA, as a foundation for their continuous improvement known as the TPS or the Toyota Productive System.
What is the advantage of applying the 5S in our daily lives? If strictly followed and implemented, the system will create an organized, clean and safe environment, specially here in the Philippines where the space that we are occupy is limited, with no sufficient areas to put cabinets and dividers to store personal effects where majority of workers are just bed spacer.
5S stand for five Japanese words that star with the letter S” Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke.
The first step of the 5S process, the Seiri –Stand For (Sort)-refers to the act of throwing away all unwanted, necessary, and related materials in your place. Don’t feel sorry about having to throw away things. The Idea is to ensure that everything left are the things you need most. Clearly distinguish needed items from un needed ones and eliminate the latter. To sort means to remove all items from your area that are not needed for current task. It does not mean that you that you remove the items that you know you may never need. It does not mean that you simply arrange things in a neater fashion. If you sort, you only leave the bare essentials” When in doubt it out.
Identify potential unneeded items: Are they needed? If they are.are they needed in this quantity? If they are needed to be located here? Put red Tags” on items are not needed. Evaluate the ideal with the unneeded ones. They will just occupy apace and limits storage space for more important items. Move unneeded items to Red Tag” holding area for a period of time, this area must be created or disposed of immediately: sell, relocate, throw way, or donate these to worthy causes, like campaigns for typhoon victims.
The next step is Seiton or orderliness. Focus on the need for order in your place. Personal effect, gadgets, utensils and other materials must be systematically arranged for the easiest and most efficient access. There must be a place for everything and everything must be in place. This would save you time and make life easy for you when you look for things in the future. On the side of your bed or in your small devider, segregate the items according and category.
